AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
| Species | Phorcus lineatus [WoRMS] | |
| Authority | (da Costa, 1778) | |
| Family | Trochidae | |
| Order | Trochida | |
| Class | Gastropoda | |
| Phylum | Mollusca | |
| Synonym (?) | ||
| Sub-species level (?) | Not entered |
| Native origin (?) | Ocean: Atlantic --> Ocean region: NE Atlantic |
| Life form / Life stage (?) |
|
| Sociability / Life stage (?) |
|
| Reproductive frequency (?) | Iteroparous |
| Reproductive type (?) | Sexual References: Smith, I. F. 2014. Phorcus lineatus, Identification & Biology. Comments: Breeds May-August/September; dates vary at different locations. External fertilization occurs as ova released individually, a few at a time or in quantity, via right neck-lobe from mantle cavity. |
| Developmental trait (?) | Lecithotrophy References: Mieszkowska, N., Mrowicki, R., Lab, M. B. A. G. A., of Life, W. S. I. T., Darwin Tree of Life Consortium. 2023. Genome sequence for the thick topshell, Phorcus lineatus (da Costa, 1778). Wellcome Open Research, 8. Comments: P. lineatus is a broadcast spawner with a lecithotrophic larval stage lasting for a few days. |
| Characteristic feeding method / Life stage (?) |
References (not structured): Smith, I. F. 2014. Phorcus lineatus, Identification & Biology. Comments: Feeds by brushing fine multi-toothed radula (teeth as soft as human hair) over rocks finely coated with algal felt or detritus to sweep up diatoms. |
| Mobility / Life stage (?) |

| Salinity tolerance range (?) | Exact range: 18 - 40 References: Mieszkowska, N. 2008. Phorcus lineatus Thick top shell. In Tyler-Walters H. and Hiscock K. (eds) Marine Life Information Network: Biology and Sensitivity Key Information Reviews, [on-line]. Plymouth: Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. DOI https://dx.doi.org/10.17031/marlinsp.1324.1 Comments: This species is found on open ocean coasts adjacent to oceanic waters and can tolerate salinities of around 33-35, which are typical of large water bodies. They also inhabit rockpools in the high mid shore zone. Osilinus lineatus can tolerate such an increase in salinity and an intolerance of low has been recorded. |
| Habitat modifying ability potential (?) | Unknown Comments: Not available. |
| Toxicity / Life stage (?) | Not relevant |
| Bioaccumulation association (?) | Anthropogenic chemical compounds References: Sif, J., Fahmi, F., Dahbi, A., Rouhi, A. 2024. Bioaccumulation of trace metals by the gastropod Phorcus lineatus (Da Costa, 1778) from the Atlantic coast of El Jadida, Morocco. Marine Pollution Bulletin, 206, 116733. |
